Electrodiagnostic Study (EDX)
What is EDX?
-
EDX Includes NCS and EMG
What is NCS?
-
Nerve conduction study (NCS) is a test that delivers electrical stimulation and measures repsonses from each individual nerves. The various parameters that are recorded from the nerve response enables us to evaluate for neuropathy, nerve damage or nerve disease; nerve entrapment or demyelinating changes.
What is EMG?
-
Electromyography (EMG) is a test that is often incoporated along side an NCS to further differentiate nerve disease versus muscle disease (myopathy)
What is the limitation of NCS and EMG
- Some patient may experience discomfor from the electrical stimulations
- The delivery and interpretation of the tests are performer dependent. The skills, experiences and patience of the provider matters
- High specificity but may not be as sensitive in detecting early diseases.
